The difference between now and times past is that now, God is getting involved. What this means is that you will come to understand why it's wrong to do what you'd hate to be done to you, like force starvation on others or hang people because they make you feel sad, mad or horny.

The point will be made over and over, each time more severe than the last, until something 'clicks' and you hate what you have done, and you are ashamed of your blood-soaked hands, and you beg the world and God for merciful forgiveness. And then the point will be made some more.

Your feeling bad for what you have done will not move God to easily relent. There will be a complete end of what you are; distress will not rise up twice to God. So the point must be made over and over.
