Within a person's idea, there is no distinction between God and religious beliefs. The notion of God, for people who have not seen God, requires beliefs and made-up tales (nature abhors a vacuum). So oftentimes, when a person leaves religion, they turn to atheism or agnosticism, as their idea of God is indistinguishable from religion (either God is an infallible book-writer and loving dad who bounces kids on his knees, or there is no God).

As you come to terms with reality, you'll understand that God is exactly what you see - it is the only way you can know God. When you position yourself to accept the little that God has shown you (which really isn't "little"), I am confident that you'll be offered much more.
